Today while catching on some of the news items around the world I came across this article on Somalia. It was very scary. The article was about a survey done by UN and according to which Somalia is suffering a grave famine which is only going to get worse in the coming months. It was expected some 750 thousand people would not be able to make it through this tough time and would succumb to malnutrition and thirst. The current rate of death in this country is about 2 per 10000 people per day. Now that is huge. Due to famine there have been great surge in food prices which is not at all affordable by the poor of the country. People are not able to buy food and so the unrest in society is also at a high. Increase in crimes is paramount.
The first question after reading the article was - Is there anything that can be done about the situation? Somalia is part of our world in which there are many other countries as well who are not facing such grave issues today and who are in a position to help this one country and its people. While many countries have military budgets in billions of dollars would it not make sense to save these people from dying by shelling out a few million? They are not asking for luxuries but basic needs of food and water. I do not understand the complexities of carrying out such bailouts but i could not fathom the pain of a mother losing her child because of hunger. I just couldn't. I couldn't understand the anxiety and suffering of those children who started on a journey with their parents in search of water and food but were left alone in the middle as their parents could not make it.
What i am thinking even when i am writing this, is that there is nothing that more than 750 thousand people will be killed and nobody would be able to do anything. We know it and we will see them die. They are people and they will die as they don't have anything to eat. And it is not at all comforting that there are many in this world who can hire people at 15000 pounds just to make food for them. And many others who keep their illegitimate money hidden in banks anonymously but won't help these people live. This disparity cannot be justified.
