Yesterday i heard a news item of a 11 year old girl committing suicide. Although we hear many cases of suicides, among children as well, but this one was different. Children mostly commit suicides due to academic pressures. But in this case the reason was something very different and may a reason to give some serious thought to. The reason this 11 year old committed suicide was that he liked a boy in school and her mother came to know about it this "love affair". Some people may want to reject this case altogether as a case of stupidity but some might want to give some serious thoughts to it. The girl was so afraid of her mother and teacher finding out about this "friendship" that she committed suicide. As a respite media used the term "Friendship" instead of some really ugly words that they are fully capable of. Police registered a case of accidental death.
This case tells us so much about the kind of divided society that we all are living in India. The age we are in, has seen a rapid gap building between generations. There are many generations living at the same time. There is this generation which seeks "love affairs" or "friendships" to be a part of their lives. Thanks to shows like Roadies, Emotional Atyachar, Splits Villa etc. And then there is this other generation which cannot see a girl getting married to whom she is in love with. Again thanks to spreading awareness about heinous crimes committed in the name of Honour and getting away with them easily.
India has skipped the transition phase of developing new generations. Instead, an individual many a times finds herself having lived many generations in a single lifetime. What this has done is that parents do not understand what children are going through. On top of it serious lack of conversations between families due to various factors like Internet, TV, working parents etc. does not allow anybody to even try to gauge the seriousness of an issue. The children get their behavior from what they see on TV rather than what their parents should have told them. The girl we are talking about here was so small that "love affair" takes a totally different meaning but still the step taken by her was that of somebody much older than her age. Try to imagine the thought process of the girl before she took the ultimate step. 'My parents have found out about this guy. They are going to share it in school too. Such a humiliation. Suicide is the only way out'. There was nobody out there to tell her that its not such a big deal. That there is so much to do and enjoy in life. Was this affair so serious that the mother had to take it up with the school? Wasn't there a necessity to calmly talk to this girl? Didn't parents think even for a moment what would it do to a small girls image at school before taking it up to the school authorities?
I just know one thing that this girl didn't deserve to die, surely not for this stupid reason. And for such a step it’s not that girl who was stupid, it was the sick mentality of the society we are living in. A mentality which cannot appreciate the tenderness of a relationship of children as small as 10-12 years. A matter that could have well been a laughing matter ended up in such tragic way. A girl who could have done wonders in her years to come, who could have lived a very beautiful life ended her life just like that. The moment since i knew about this case i cannot get it out of my mind. I cannot comprehend why some things have to become larger than life.
